The human eye is able to see a much more dynamic range of lights and darks than can be captured by a camera. This means that scenes with very bright light, and very dark shadows cannot be easily captured by a camera in the same way we see them with our eyes. For example looking out from a shaded balcony onto the bright sunny beach. The camera doesn't have enough sensitivity to se both the shaded porch, and the sunny beech at the same time. To resolve this limitation, at Roatan Photography, we use studio strobes to supplement the light in the shadows and give an even tone to the image. This is essential in allowing viewers to see all the details of the image, from the furniture on the porch to the blue sky and sandy beach.

Here is an example of a professionally lit image that shows details on the shaded porch as well as on the sunny beach. Move your mouse over the image to see the the unlit version.

In this next example, the image without additional lighting has been taken in the camera's auto mode. Because the camera can't capture both the bright and dark parts of the image, it automatically exposes for the middle. Unfortunately this means it captures neither the sunny outside or the shaded porch. Mouse over the image to see the final properly lit image.
